Screening for STDs - STIs & HIV

STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) are now called STIs, sexually transmitted infections. We prefer now to speak of them as infections because symptoms are not always obvious. Despite the apparent absence of disease, these infections can be spread without knowledge of those infected and produce a perceptible disease in their sexual partners. This is the main reason why sexually active people should be tested and seek treatment if necessary.

To address these needs, Crea-MeD has established a rapid screening service to test for the most common STIs, including: chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B and HIV. For women, we take a culture of vaginal secretions in order to detect and treat vaginitis, trichomonas infections and bacterial vaginosis.

Blood samples and vaginal specimens are made by a nurse. For men, chlamydia and gonorrhea screening is conducted by polymerase chain reaction and requires a urine sample. The results of serological tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis are usually available within 2 business days. The screening results for chlamydia and gonorrhea usually require about 5 working days.

In the absence of symptoms, you will only need to meet the nurse for testing. In the presence of symptoms or if your tests come back positive, a doctor’s appointment will be necessary.
