Andropause

Andropause is caused by a decrease in testosterone levels linked to age. This process is due to two mechanisms. First, the production of testosterone by the body decreases from the age of 25 with the reduction accelerating over time. Then, the body increases its production of a substance called sex hormone-carrier protein which, in fact, prevents the hormone its link to from producing a biological effect. Thus, a man in his forties may experience a 40% reduction in his level of free testosterone from what he produced at 20 years of age.

Andropause - Age-related Decline in Testosterone Levels

This drop in testosterone is associated with several signs and symptoms such as:
  • decreased sex drive,
  • emotional, psychological and behavioral problems
  • reduced muscle mass
  • loss of muscle strength
  • increased fat mass in the central and upper body,
  • diminished size,
  • diminished bone mass
  • decreased energy,
  • frequent fatigue,
  • mood swings.
  • lack of concentration or memory loss
  • decreased energy,
Andropause can be corrected by testosterone supplementation. The patient must be assessed in a holistic manner taking into consideration the complete hormone picture so as not to overlook a more serious underlying disease. Moreover, the effects of hormone therapy can not be separated from metabolism, nutrition or physical activity.
